By the year 2030, one in every five Americans will be in their senior years! So what is the definition of “senior”, how old is “old”? Today, no one really seems to know a definite answer, or when we become “seniors.” Some places give senior discounts at 55; others at 65; but the AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons) allows you to join at 50–and starts sending you mail when you're 48! So what is a senior?
We do know that aging can cause your physical and mental abilities to weaken. But we don't know how fast that process will progress, or how negative its effects will be. In short, it's impossible to generalize about "seniors." Every senior is an individual, with a unique set of life experiences, genetics and current needs.
Studies show that a positive attitude leads to a robust maturity and aging successfully. Said W. Somerset Mangham of aging successfully, “age has its pleasures, which, though different, are not less than the pleasures of youth.” Successful aging means being able to live up to your full potential, whatever that may be, no matter your age or condition. And regular medical assessments and quality medical care is an important part of this process – and toward cultivating that positive attitude.
So what are some steps to keeping a positive attitude and aging successfully? For a start, we know that attitudes improve when you understand fully your physical and mental strengths and weaknesses.
The health assessment services at Paradise Senior Health Center (PSHC) helps seniors and their families face specific medical challenges positively. Attitudes improve when you have confidence in your caregivers.
