State-of-the-Art Upgrades

Other projects on the horizon include a new medical office building, a parking structure, and a new state-of-the-art hospital that will completely replace the current hospital.  One of the most recent upgrade in hospital technology is the world’s most powerful computed tomography (CT) imaging system – a tool that is renowned for its ability to detect the earliest signs of cancer, heart disease, stroke and other life-threatening disease.  Paradise Valley Hospital is the only South Bay hospital to own the 64-slice CT scanner that is making big headlines around the world.

“We’re excited to bring this medical innovation to all San Diegans,” said Robin Gomez, PVH Director of Nursing.  “The GE LightSpeed Volume CT scanner allows us to perform exams faster and with better resolution than ever possible before,” she said.

The 64-slice CT system enables doctors to capture three-dimensional images of a beating heart in just five heart beats, half the amount of time required by other CT systems.  It can deliver up to 73 percent more coverage per second of any given region of interest over previous CT technology. Faster scanning means a reduction in radiation exposure to the patient as well as clearer images to the physician.  A recent study showed that 92 percent of the patient population could have their heart scanned with GE’s Lightspeed CT since it required patients to hold their breath for only five heartbeats.  In comparison, a mere 10 percent of patients could be scanned with the 10-beat or 32-slice cardiac system.
